  • Fastest mile, new racquet, maybe doubles

Small pile of updates that don’t really deserve their own posts, so here they are together.

๐Ÿƒ Fastest mile of the year

Strava told me today’s run had my fastest mile of 2026. It says in the app “11:07 /mi” but not seeing it on the actual site, so who knows. Wasn’t trying for it, which is usually how these things go. Nice little surprise.

The morning run today was nice and cool. I’ve been making it a habit to get out there early in the morning on my run days during the week, since I don’t have to drive my son to school until late August. There’s a calmness and silent camaraderie about being out there early and seeing others commit to their own efforts. People are usually friendly out here and sometimes they’ll greet me with a “good morning” almost every time.

    ๐ŸŽพ New racquet & techniques

The Head Speed MP (2024) arrived. Been watching a lot of forehand YouTube lately and actually tried some of the tips at last Saturday’s clinic โ€” someone noticed, which felt good.

Very excited to actually swing the new one this Saturday. Decided to name it “Oreo” because it’s literally black and white and I don’t care for zebras. Had to find a way to distinguish it between all the Head racquets I’ve acquired over the years. Also, a little strawberry dampener is showing up tomorrow, purely for personality reasons.

I also am trying a new “abbreviated serve” motion that seems to be showing good results. I hit a few good serves and I usually am terrible at serving. Since I have a strange habit of providing too much power/aggression in my shots, this style of serve has pleasantly surprised me and I’m happy the instructor suggested it to me. Why didn’t the “tennis coaches” teach any of this in school? I don’t remember much from my paid lesson on serving, either. Oh well.

    ๐Ÿ‘ฏ Maybe a doubles group?

A potential doubles group has quietly formed over the last couple weeks. No day locked in yet, but possibly next week. We’ll see how it goes.

That’s all for now. Until next time. โœŒ๏ธ

  • ๐Ÿฅต Defeated by the Heat (A Fourth of July Court Session)

Well, the Fourth of July went to the heat. Final score: Charlotte summer 1, me 0.

I was out on court for drills from 9 to 10:30 in the morning, which sounds early enough to be safe. It was not. I actually started on a shaded court, which was glorious and completely fooled me into thinking I had the day handled. Then we rotated to a different court for a new set of drills, and that one sat out in the full sun for basically the rest of the session. By the time we wrapped, I was thoroughly cooked.

My forehand also chose that day to completely fall apart. Most of them were honestly awful, spraying long or just not feeling like mine. I’m choosing to blame two things: my brand new strings, which I’m still adjusting to, and the fact that my brain was slowly poaching in the sun. The Wilson Revolve 16 job is fresh, and one hot, sweaty session is way too early to judge how it actually plays, so I’m giving it a pass for now. The forehand rebuild continues.

The heat got the last laugh, too. I ended up with a headache that stuck around for almost two full days. And not a cute little afternoon headache either. The kind that sets up camp behind your eyes and refuses to leave. Pretty sure that was my body’s very direct way of telling me I overdid it in the sun and did not drink nearly enough water.

The next day I kept it extremely gentle. My husband and I walked a 5K on the dirt trail, clinging to every shaded stretch like our lives depended on it. So much smarter. Ten out of ten, would hide from the sun again.

Lesson logged: even a 9am start in a Charlotte summer will get you if you spend the back half baking in direct sun. More water, chase the shade, and a lot less ego when the heat index is showing off. Cutting a drill short or taking an extra water break isn’t weakness, it’s just common sense I apparently needed a two-day headache to relearn.

So the heat can have the Fourth. It doesn’t get the comeback, though. I’ll be back on court this coming Saturday. ๐ŸŽพ

  • ๐ŸŽพ Court Notes: Why I’m Starting This

I’ve been keeping a couple of run logs on here for a while now, and honestly I haven’t posted enough of them, but they’re probably the only interesting thing on this little blog. So I’m doing the same thing for tennis. Consider this the start of a new series.

    The short backstory

Tennis and I actually go way back. I grew up right near the high school tennis courts, so I’d wander over and hit around ‘for fun’ as a kid, long before I had any real clue what I was doing. My sister and her friend would rally and I’d be on the bench either watching or hanging on a tree limb. She ended up playing for school, and that’s what nudged me to play for school too, starting at 13. (For the record, I’m not crediting her for any of it, because I still kind of suck. But whatever. We could’ve been the Asian Venus and Serena, is all I’m saying.)

I got serious about it again in 2021 with weekly group cardio tennis clinics and some private instruction, drilling forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves. Then life did its thing and I drifted away from it in 2022. This year I found my way back through a Saturday drill clinic, and I forgot how much I missed it.

    Where I’m at right now

My backhand is the dependable one โ€” it mostly just shows up and does its job. My forehand is the project. I tend to overhit it and it can be inconsistent, so right now I’m working on a few specific things: coiling sideways instead of opening up too early, not rushing the swing, and brushing low-to-high for topspin. It’s very much a work in progress, and that’s kind of the whole point of writing this down.

    There’s a gear situation

No shiny new racket in the picture. I’m still playing my trusty Head Speed MP Graphene XT, and honestly I’m happy with it. What’s new is the string job: I just had it restrung with Wilson Revolve 16 at 53 pounds, and fresh strings make more of a difference than I expected. Turns out I have opinions about string now. More on all that later.

    Why bother writing it down

Mostly, this is for me. Tennis progress is slow and hard to feel day to day, the same way running is. But when I scroll back through my run logs on Strava, I can actually see how far I’ve come. I want that for tennis too โ€” a record of the messy middle, not just the good days.

    What to expect

    • Court Notes after my Saturday clinics โ€” what we drilled, what clicked, what fell apart.
    • Gear posts whenever I have something to say about rackets and strings (see above).
    • The occasional milestone when something finally clicks. Looking at you, forehand.

So that’s the plan. If you’re reading this, hi. And if it’s just future me reading this a year from now โ€” hi to you too. Let’s see where this goes. ๐ŸŽพ

  • ๐Ÿƒ Run Log โ€” Wednesday, 5/13/2026

    • Distance: 2.44 miles
    • Time: 30 minutes
    • Pace: 12:15/mi
    • Weather: 73ยฐ F
    • Effort (1โ€“10): 6

    ๐Ÿค” How it went

No walking this time; just non-stop for 30 minutes. Following a new workout plan and this was what Wednesday’s run required: 30-35 minutes at 13:00 pace.
I went a bit faster than I should have.

    ๐Ÿ‘€ One thing I noticed

I was able to control my breathing based off my pace for 30 minutes. Still prefer cooler temperature runs, but probably need to acclimate to warm weather in general since it’s almost summer.

    โœจ Win of the day

Getting out there in general was enough of a win 4 me.

    ๐Ÿ“ After run side notes

Had a protein shake after and a delicious Impossible Whopper!

Next time, I’ll try to go slower and follow the instructions. I’ll probably look like I’m barely running, but oh well.

  • ๐Ÿƒ Run Log โ€” Sunday, 5/10/2026

    • Distance: 2.01 miles
    • Time: 25 minutes
    • Pace: 12:35 /mi
    • Weather: 75ยฐ F
    • Effort (1โ€“10): 6

    ๐Ÿค” How it went

The miles feel so much longer when using the treadmill. Kinda sucks, but that’s okay because I’m still a little sore from the core workout from Wednesday. Took it easy and I didn’t force myself to prove anything today.

    ๐Ÿ‘€ One thing I noticed

Breathing was good & comfortable for around 1.25 miles in.

    โœจ Win of the day

Ran 2 miles on the dreadmill without walking. Didn’t have to battle the weather or run around other people.

    ๐Ÿ“ After run side notes

Had a protein shake after, and then I made some tasty veggie burgers with steak fries for myself and my husband for lunch. Could honestly go for another one, but I will resist.

Until the next run, au revoir!

  • Friday 5 โ€” A smooth, healthy week

    1. Wins from this week.

Smooth work week, not stressful. (Probably just jinxed next week.) ๐Ÿคž

Stayed sober all week. Heart rate is coming down. Drinking lots of water. ๐Ÿ’ง

    2. Something that fueled me.

Water, coffee, and too much food. โ˜•

    3. A small moment worth keeping.

My son had a great week at school. Really good feedback from his teacher. ๐Ÿ’›

    4. Something I’m working through.

Keeping up with running and exercise while also working on my websites. Both want time I don’t always have.

    5. What I’m looking forward to.

Enjoying the weekend as much as possible. ๐ŸŒฟ

  • Rained Out, So: Core Day

It rained during the time I was going to go for a lunch run, so instead of just sitting out I dug up an old core workout. Haven’t done one in months, so I only completed one round of each.

    ๐Ÿ“Š Quick stats

    • Duration: 18:18
    • Avg HR: 113 bpm (peaks ~141)
    • Active calories: 47
    • Effort: moderate, no real struggle

    ๐Ÿ’ช The workout

One round, ~30โ€“45 sec rest between exercises:

    • Warmup: marches, squats, lunges, arm circles
    • Plank โ€” 30โ€“45 sec
    • Dead bugs โ€” 10/side
    • Glute bridges โ€” 15
    • Bird dogs โ€” 10/side
    • Side plank โ€” 20โ€“30 sec/side
    • Mountain climbers (slow) โ€” 20โ€“30 total
    • Reverse lunges โ€” 10/leg

    ๐Ÿค” How it went

Not gonna lie, weird that a “core” workout had reverse lunges in it โ€” the warmup already had squats AND lunges, so my legs were feeling it way before my core was. Apparently single-leg stuff counts as core because it makes your torso work to not wobble. Got through it without too much struggle though. Core probably won’t say hi until tomorrow.

    ๐Ÿ‘€ One thing I noticed

My side planks were kinda shaky. Apparently that’s a good sign โ€” means the smaller core muscles tap out before the bigger ones, which is the whole point. So I know where to keep working.

    ๐Ÿƒ For running

Hopefully this helps my running somehow. Bird dogs and side planks supposedly keep your hips from wobbling when you run, and reverse lunges are basically practicing what running already is โ€” one foot at a time. We’ll see.

    โœจ Win of the day

At least I didn’t sit it out. I had to do something.
